The Institute for Physical Education & Sport has once again organised the annual University of Malta staff football league in aid of Puttinu Cares Foundation.
This year seven teams participates, namely, the Institute for P.E. & Sport (IPES) team, the Faculty of ICT, the Faculty of Engineering, Administration, IT Services Blues, IT Services Yellows and the APQRU/SIMS Office team.
A round robin tournament started off in November 2015 with the final standings showing that IT Services Blues would have to battle it out in the first semifinal with Faculty of ICT who in turn made it through to the semifinals for their first time ever. In the other semifinal, last year's winners IPES faced APQRU/SIMS, last year's finalist.
In the first semifinal, after a hard fought 3-3 scoreline, it was IT Services Blues who won on penalties. In the second semifinal, IPES had the better of APQRU/SIMS Office with a 3-1 scoreline after a goalless first half.
Unlike the first round match where the eventual finalists shared 4 goals, the final was a totally different story. IPES in fact dominated and won the final 6-0.
Most importantly, all participating players gave a donation towards the charitable institution already mentioned and close to EUR 500 were raised. The highlight for the league was the presentation ceremony held immediately after the final: Ms Jacqueline Fenech, Administrative Director of the Human Resources & Development Office presented the donation to Dr Andrew Decelis, Director IPES and also Puttinu Cares Foundation representative.
The organisers would like to thank the members of staff for their participation and donation and also thanks the University Welfare Fund Committee who sponsored the trophies and medals.
