Professor Alfred J Vella and Ms Marta Falzon
The Institute of Earth Systems' Award for Academic Excellence is presented annually to students who obtain outstanding results in the B.Sc. (Hons) Earth Systems course. The undergraduate degree course in Earth Systems is interdisciplinary in nature, with a focus on the science of planetary systems and the management of natural resources. It was launched in October 2011, and a total of 70 students of the programme have graduated so far. In order to qualify for the Award for Academic Excellence, which is sponsored by the HSBC Malta Foundation, students must obtain consistently high grades, including 80 ECTS at grade A or better, during the first two years of the course.
The award for 2016 was presented to Ms Marta Falzon by Professor Alfred J Vella, Institute Chairman and Pro-Rector for Academic Affairs, and the Institute’s Director, Professor Louis F Cassar, during a ceremony held on 5th April 2016. The presentation was also attended by members of the Board of the Institute, by the coordinator of the B.Sc. (Hons) Earth Systems programme, student representatives of the Board and by other Institute academics.
