The University of Malta’s Centre for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at Msida campus today hosted Minister Evarist Bartolo. Rector Prof. Juanito Camilleri and Rector-elect and Chairman of the Board of the Centre for Traditional Chinese Medicine, Prof. Alfred J. Vella, welcomed the Minister and showed him round the Centre, which comprises a clinic as well as lecture rooms.
The Centre is run jointly by the University of Malta and the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM). SHUTCM is an established leader in its field and boasts a group of celebrated experts amongst its staff. Academics from the University of Malta together with their counterparts from SHUTCM were responsible for the design of the Master Programme in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Culture, which started last October Another programme of studies is intended to start in October 2016. The study programme comprises clinical practice of TCM to complement theoretical studies.
The clinic at the Centre offers treatments to the public during office hours. It is led by resident Chinese clinical professionals from Longhua Hospital, SHUTCM, which is one of the oldest and best TCM hospitals in China.
Acupuncture is an important part of TCM which is rooted in ancient philosophy and dates back to more than 3000 years. Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific acupoints along the skin involving various methods such as the use of thin needles, the application of heat, moxibustion, cupping, electro-acupuncture etc. The indications for acupuncture include several system diseases where chronic pain is the most common presentation. Neurological, respiratory and digestive disorders are the common painful conditions treated with acupuncture.
Prof. Charles Savona Ventura, Director of the Centre, and Mr Reno Calleja, University of Malta Council Representative, clinical practitioners Dr Fu and Dr Wang, as well as Master students were present to welcome Minister Bartolo.
