The course leading to a B.Sc. (Honours) in Dental Technology offered by the Faculty of Dental Surgery, University of Malta, trains the student in the art and science of Dental Technology. Besides the theoretical component, this course of studies carries a considerable practical component where the student is trained in laboratory procedures leading to the construction of orthodontic appliances, full and partial dentures and dental crowns and bridges. The trained Dental Technologist may also eventually produce speciality items such as surgical splints, sports mouth guards and implant supported restorations.
Qualities of a dental technologist
Dental Technologists have to be artistic and precise. All pieces of work are constructed manually to high precision according to the dentist’s prescription, custom made to the needs of the patient.
Duties of the dental technologist
The Dental Technologist is an integral part of the Dental Team. Together with the Dentist, the Dental Technologist strives to produce the best possible solutions for the patient’s functional and aesthetic needs. Good communication with the Dental team is fundamental to allow for evaluation and gathering of patient related information leading to the best product achievable.
Areas of specialisation within dental technology include:
Prosthodontics: implantology and associated prostheses, advanced fixed prosthodontics
Orthodontics: appliances for adolescence.
Maxillo Facial: facial prostheses, obturators.
