University of Malta Rector-Elect Professor Alfred Vella led a small delegation to the 60th Anniversary Celebrations of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM).
At a special forum for university rectors, Professor Vella gave a presentation about the University of Malta, outlining its collaboration with SHUTCM. The latter is an established leader in its field and boasts a group of celebrated experts amongst its staff. Academics from the University of Malta together with their counterparts from SHUTCM designed the Master Programme in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Culture, which started at the University of Malta last October and will be offered again in October 2016. The Centre for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at Msida campus comprises several lecture rooms as well as a clinic which is open to the public.
Professor Charles Savona Ventura, who accompanied Professor Vella, is the Director of the TCM Centre. He gave an interesting lecture at SHUTCM on 'Traditional Maltese Medicine' where he explained that traditional medicine played a pivotal role in managing disease for millennia, especially when contemporary medical practice had little substantial to offer and was thus often ineffective or inaccessible to the lower class population. Traditional Maltese medicine and traditional Chinese medicine share common understanding on life and disease management, he said, 'It is an eternal theme for human beings to study life and health. Interactions and cooperation among medical systems are of great significance to further medical advance.'
Mr Reno Calleja, University of Malta Council Representative, accompanied Prof. Vella and Prof. Savona Ventura.
