Abigail Callus, a student at G.F. Abela Junior College, is the Maltese winner of the 2016-2017 translation contest for schools Juvenes Translatores. This is a competition to reward the best young translators in the European Union.
Abigail is among 27 other winners, one from each EU Member State, who will be awarded a prize, a trophy and a paper diploma for their achievement. At the award ceremony, which will be held in Brussels on 6 April 2017, the winners will receive their trophies from Commissioner Günther Oettinger, responsible for Budget and Human Resources.
University of Malta Rector, Profesor Alfred J. Vella, pointed out that the Abigail was already showing much promise in a field that is so important to the European Union’s ideal of ‘being united in diversity’ by communicating across languages. He congratulated Abigail Callus and wished her a successful future.
Ms Callus said she is delighted that she won this competition and honoured to have the opportunity to represent her country and the Junior College in the Award ceremony in Brussels. She thanked her tutor Dr Claudine Borg for the training she provided and the European Commission for giving such opportunities to students. Last but not least, she also thanked her family for their constant support.
Dr Claudine Borg, who coordinates the translation competition on behalf of the Junior College, said she is very pleased that this is the fifth time that her students have won this prestigious contest. She also noted that three other Junior College students were awarded a certificate for outstanding translations.
