Prof. Alan Deidun, resident academic within the Department of Geosciences, has been bestowed with the environmental journalism award for 2016 by the Institute of Maltese Journalists, during a ceremony held on 6 May.
Prof. Deidun has been penning an opinion column for The Sunday Times of Malta since 2002, and this is the fourth time (2010, 2012, 2014 and 2017) that Prof. Deidun has won this award having participated within the national journalism awards since 2008. Prof. Deidun has sat on the committees of a number of local environmental NGOs over the past twenty years and currently represents the same NGOs on the Board of the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA).
The three winning article submissions presented by Prof. Deidun for the competition are:

- How to mistreat a coastal zone
- Reclaiming land for even more luxury apartments.
