The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the world’s largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers who would like to study or do research in Germany. At the moment applications for the following scholarship programmes are open:
Research Grants – Short-Term Grants
Who can apply?
Excellently-qualified doctoral candidates and young academics and scientists who have completed a Master's degree or Diploma, or in exceptional cases a Bachelor's degree at the latest by the time they begin their grant-supported research, or those who have already completed a Ph.D. (postdocs).
What can be funded?
A research project of course of continuing education at a state or state-recognised institution of higher education or a nun-university research institute in Germany, which is being carried out in coordination with an academic adviser in Germany.
Duration of the funding: 1 – 6 months
Application deadline: 1 April 2017 for scholarships between 1 August 2017 and 15 January 2018
Research Stays for University Academics and Scientists
Who can apply?
University teachers and established academics and scientists who have usually completed a doctoral degree and work at a university or research institute in their home country.
What can be funded?
Research stays at state or state-recognised institutions of higher education or nun-university research institute in Germany.
Duration of the funding: 1 – 3 months
Application deadline: 1 April 2017 for scholarships between 1 August 2017 and 15 January 2018
Re-invitation Programme for Former Scholarship Holders
Who can apply?
Former holders of DAAD research grants or study scholarships, who were funded for a period of over six months
What can be funded?
Research and working projects at state or state-recognised institutions of higher education or nun-university research institutes in Germany.
Working stays at an institution in business, administration, culture or media for former scholarship holders who work outside the science sector.
Duration of the funding: 1 – 3 months

Study Visits by Groups of Students
Who can apply?
University teachers.
What is supported?
Study trips for groups of a maximum of 15 students accompanied by one university teacher. Individual doctoral candidates may also be funded after consultation with the DAAD. The groups visit at least two German universities where they participate in the academic programme. A cultural programme is to be organised in the evenings and at weekends.
Duration of the funding: 7 – 12 days
