Background
The European Research Council supports frontier research, cross disciplinary proposals and pioneering ideas in new and emerging fields which introduce unconventional and innovative approaches. The ERC's mission is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-driven frontier research across all fields of research, on the basis of scientific excellence. A total budget of 13 095 million euro is available for the implementation of the ERC funding schemes under Horizon 2020.
The event
The event is organised jointly by the Malta Council for Science and Technology and the European Research Council (ERC). It will be attended by members of the ERC Scientific Council and representatives of the Maltese academia, research, and non-academia sectors. The aim of the event is to inform the Maltese potential applicants of the available funding opportunities and encourage them to apply. In addition, the event will provide a platform for discussion between ERC Scientific Council members and potential applicants.
The ERC Scientific Council
The Scientific Council, the ERC's governing body, defines the scientific funding strategy and methodologies. It acts on behalf of the scientific community in Europe to promote creativity and innovative research.
The Scientific Council is composed of eminent scientists and scholars, including some Nobel Prize winners. The members are appointed by the European Commission, on the recommendations of an independent Identification Committee.
The Chair of the Scientific Council, currently Professor Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, is the President of the ERC and the formal representative of the ERC, including its Scientific Council, to the European Commission and other bodies.
