DESCRIPTION Issues of Generic Research appropriate to study at this level:

- Research methods, criteria, forms of presentation (JB)
- Theoretical bases and their application (PSI)
- Resources; libraries, archives, search and retrieval (SM)
- Methods of research applicable to use of I.C.T.(HS)
- Awareness of specificity of contexts (LS)
- Conducting practical research; praxis, empirical, ethnographic (LS, JB)
- Qualitative and quantitative approaches (JB)
- Design and analysis of research projects (all)
- Initial Research question (and sub-questions)
- Review of literature, collection of data, annotated bibliography

Study-unit Aims

Individual Research

Selection and written articulation of literature, methods of research and literature review appropriate to the student’s chosen topic.
Individual tutorial meetings in support of the research exercise.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

To give students the skills appropriate in:

- Selecting the field of enquiry
- Contextualising that field of enquiry within the broader history of ideas.
- Seeking appropriate theoretical models
- Expressing understandings of the relationship between theory and data
- Developing the capacity to select and adhere to an appropriate methodology
- Demonstrating the ability to select, justify and annotate selected literature

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Construct a framework of theory for analysis, practice and application of selected aspects of dance/performing arts
- explain in depth the selected methodology to be applied
- Select, justify and annotate an appropriate literature review
