TITLE Independent Dance Praxis

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 15

DEPARTMENT Dance Studies

DESCRIPTION This module examines the nature of practice as research (also known as practice-based research) with particular reference to the problematising of notions of 'professional', 'artistic' and 'academic' practices. It does so through an exploration of various epistemologies of, and knowledges generated by, practice as research (PAR). Practice as research is normally an original investigation where some of the resulting knowledge is embodied in an artifact.

Key concepts to be interrogated include: tacit knowledge, subjective/objective knowing, perception, accessibility, relevance, reflection, evaluation, documentation, dissemination.

The student will consider the application of these concepts to the chosen aspects of dance/performance, and investigate specific choreographic, technological, pedagogic and/or performative examples of the above concepts.

Specific parameters of the assessment to be negotiated with the Programme Director and documented in a negotiated contract. In general terms the assessment will require evidence of research, performance or digital media presentation, explication of process and reflective evaluation of one's own work.

Study-unit Aims:

- aid student ability to identify and discuss selected issues and concepts of practice as research in relation to exemplars;
- develop the ability to acquire knowledge of reflexive practice in the arts as debated in current literature and to investigate the relationship of theory to dance praxis;
- develop with understanding selected aspects of research into personal performance practice;
- introduce skills pertinent to the investigation and dissemination of performance ‘knowledge’.
