| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit analyses the development of theatre-making in Malta: it considers indigenous forms and their relationship to newer forms of theatre and performance practices established through contact with modern European culture. Different critical approaches will be used to account for the specific nature of Maltese contemporary theatre, while particular attention will be given to the post-Independence period as a time of great theatrical innovation. The study-unit will also discuss the performative aspects of activities such as carnival, 'għana', and religious festivities. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit provides students with a specialised overview of the history of theatre-making in Malta, ranging from the sixteenth century to the contemporary period. It will enable students to place Maltese theatre and performance practices within the relevant socio-political and international contexts. It will also provide students with knowledge of the more important sources for writing about theatre and performance history in Malta. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Place events in Maltese theatre history in a critical and historical perspective; - Evaluate and analyse the main aspects that contributed to the development of a theatrical tradition in Malta; - Compare Maltese theatre and performance to similar or related phenomena in the West and in other areas in the world. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Work autonomously and in groups on research and presentation tasks; - Demonstrate skills in how to use archives and how to extract and apply data from archival material; - Demonstrate communication and presentational skills, both in debate and discussion, in presentation and in writing.
