The April meeting of the Mathematical Society is entitled: "Graphing Calculators in the Secondary Classroom". The speakers are Jill Kirkstadt and Cory Macdowell. Both speakers teach at the Verdala International School, St Andrews and regularly use graphing calculators in class.
The use of calculators in the classroom is a controversial topic, but students are allowed to use them during external exams. The question is no longer should we be using them?" but "How can we use them effectively as a classroom tool?" The lecture will provide a basic overview of the capabilities of the calculator and some practical lessons including Linear Graphing, Matrices, and Solving Systems of Equations, and possibly a program or two. This will be a "hands-on" opportunity, as calculators will be provided by Texas Instruments!
The meeting will be held on Tuesday, 13 April 1999, at 6pm at the Engineering Lecture Theatre (ELT), University of Malta (entrance through Car Park 2).
