Last Monday 2nd October, 1999, the Reggie Miller Foundation of the General Workers Union joined forces with the Division of Gerontology and Geriatrics, University of Malta to organise a comprehensive pre-retirement programme. The programme consists of 20 sessions, each of two hours' duration. It is aimed at enabling employees, members of the General Workers Union, who will be retiring from employment during this or the coming year, to prepare themselves for a new lifestyle, socially, economically, psychologically and healthwise. Thirteen lecturers from various disciplines will deal with a wide variety of topics. These include: nutrition and healthy eating; solitude in old age; maintaining an active life; social benefits and programmes; role and status of the elderly in Maltese society; voluntary work; budgeting in old age; ethical aspects; legal aspects; caring for an older persons, basic principles in First Aid. Lectures are being held at the GWU Memorial Building in Valletta. This programme is the result of an agreement signed earlier on in May between the General Workers Union and the Division of Gerontology and Geriatrics, University of Malta. According to this agreement, a number of similar programmes will be carried out throughout the coming years for GWU retiring members. The Division of Gerontology has started running such programmes since November 1997 when it had the first programme for Enemalta employees. During the past 3 years, similar programmes have been given to Air Malta; Bank of Valletta; Enemalta (3); Malta Drydocks (4); Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association; Staff Development Organisation, Ministry for Gozo; Staff Development Organisation, Office of the Prime Minister. Other programmes are scheduled for this and next year in collaboration with a number of organisations in the public and private sector.
