General Assembly of European Internet Domain Registries to be held in Malta The Malta Internet Foundation, also known as NIC(Malta), is organizing the annual General Assembly of the Council of European National Top level Domain Registries (CENTR) whose 26 member registries cover the Internet domains for practically all European countries. The assembly will take place on the 7th and 8th February, 2000 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Tigne.

The top-level Internet domains, such as .uk for Britain, .it for Italy, are known in the trade as Country Code Top Level Domains, or ccTLDs for short. NIC(Malta) currently manages the Maltese ccTLD (MT domain) registry. CENTR provides a forum to discuss matters of policy affecting ccTLD registries and acts as a channel of communication to Internet governing bodies and other bodies involved in the Internet. It promotes the interests of ccTLDs and best practice in Internet domain registry management. CENTR affects a policy of overall Internet administration by active contributions to the top internet bodies such as IANA, the Internet Assigned Names and Numbers authority and now its international counterpart, ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers which has been newly developed and constituted. CENTR also facilitates collaborative projects on technical, managerial and legal issues affecting ccTLDs.

NIC(Malta) is a founder member of CENTR, and through it, of the Domain Name Supporting Organization of ICANN (the global body governing policy on Internet domains). The acceptance of CENTR of our hosting of this event is an important act of recognition of the standing of the .MT registry within the European Internet domain registries.  It also serves to promote Malta as a country that has attained a degree of maturity in the arena of Internet services and telecommunications.
While much of the proceedings will take place in closed sessions, NIC(Malta) will be organizing an opportunity for interaction between the delegates and distinguished players in the Maltese Internet and Telecoms industry. The Minister of Transport and Communications, The Honorable Censu Galea, will be addressing the CENTR delegates.

NIC(Malta) would like to acknowledge the generous contribution of Maltacom plc in support of the above event.
