Opening of Academic Year 2000/2001 The Opening Ceremony was attended by over 2000 university freshers* and by the new students from Junior College**.  Speeches by the KSU President, Mr Karl Gouder and the Rector of the University, Professor Roger Ellul-Micallef were followed by Holy Mass. Fr Jimmy Bartolo, the University Chaplain officiated and the hymns were led by Mr John Busuttil and his band.

As in previous years, the Freshers of the year 2000 will have the opportunity to get to know the University through the organization of an Orientation Week. These initial days are the result of collaboration between the KSU and the University's Administration.

The KSU has seen to the printing of a brochure giving details of all Freshers' Week activities which include: academic meetings; talks by counsellors and the chaplaincy; information sessions about student exchanges and extra-curricular credits; presentations by student associations; film shows; a Forum organized by KSU & Insite.  Evening  entertainment is also on the programme in the shape of a Freshers' Party; an evening at a local disco and SDM 'unplugged' concert.  Tours of campus will be run by members of KSU while the Atriju Vassalli will host a number of stands providing information on the various courses.

A very intense Orientation Programme for over 300 new international students has been going on over the last two days and they will now be joining the Maltese students in all activities. The overseas students programme offered talks on getting the most out of Malta; academic information; an address by people from various religious denominations and cultural tours of the island and news about sports activities.
