As Visiting Fulbright Professor at the University of Malta, Professor Fredland will be giving a course on African Politics in the International Relations programme, built around his recent book Understanding Africa (Burnham Publishers, 2001). He is also contributing to the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies programme.

Professor Fredland has been on the political science faculty since 1970, and for fifteen of those years he chaired the department.

He received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the American University in Washington DC and his teaching and research interests lie in international politics, particularly Africa and international organisations.  Among his publications is the book A guide to African International Organisations (London, Hans Zell, 1990).  His recent work has focused on the politics of AIDS in Africa, and he spent 1997 on a Fulbright teaching fellowship in Malawi.

For several years he has participated in the Department's international affairs television program, "Consider This".  In recent years he has been involved in faculty governnance, including the Presidency of the Faculty and Chairman of a university-wide task force on missions of the university.

Dr Dorane Fredland, his wife, lectures on women and politics, and sex discrimination and the law, at Indiana University; she is also a management consultant for women's groups.
