SUSTAINABILITY INDICATORS FOR MALTA

The Sustainability Indicators-Malta Observatory (SIMO) was set up in 2000 with the aim of establishing a system for the collection, evaluation, storage and dissemination of data and information on the environment and sustainable development.  SIMO is hosted by the Islands and Small States Institute within the Foundation for International Studies at the University of Malta, with Professor Lino Briguglio as director.

SIMO is currently participating in a two-year Mediterranean Environmental Reporting Monitoring and Information System (MED-ERMIS) project. As part of this project SIMO has conducted research on Sustainability Indicators. It has recently completed a data collection exercise where approximately 100 indicators for Malta were computed, using the methodology proposed by Blue Plan (Mediterranean Action Plan). This exercise was carried out in collaboration with the National Statistics Office.

These sustainability indicators for Malta will be presented during a conference that will be held at the New dolmen Hotel, Qawra on Tuesday 11th June 2002 between 9 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. The conference will discuss the indicators and will consult with interested parties on the methodology used and on the coverage of the indicators.
