Introduction to Archival Research in Malta
10-18 December 2003
A 10-hour evening course spread over five sessions under the auspices of
the Division of Library & Information Studies within the Centre for Communications
Technology, University of Malta.

Purpose:
To introduce students, researchers, information workers, and people interested
in the history of Malta to the archives of Malta.
Goal:
To create the framework for an interactive web-based course/information page,
useful for anybody wanting to research the archives of Malta.
Description:
This course will introduce participants to Malta’s historical archives, which
include the archives of the Knights of Malta and the ecclesiastical archives
of Malta and Gozo. The course will describe archival organization and
finding aids. The course will also introduce participants to new forms
of digital access, and the availability of Internet records.
Intended for:
Librarians, archivists, researchers of Melitensia, genealogists, and those
interested in historical archives generally and in the future of digital
access. This class will draw upon the resources of the Malta Study Center
of the Hill Monastic Manuscript Library, in particular its website at www.hmml.org/centers/malta

- What is in the Malta Archives?
- What types of archives exist on Malta?
- What tools do I need for archival research?
- How can I find what I need to know?
- What is the relevance of historical archives in the modern world?
When & where:
Sessions will be held on the University campus, utilising an Internet connection
with the Malta Study Center in Collegeville, Minnesota, between 5.30 and
7.30pm on the following dates

- Thursday 11th
- Friday 12th
- Wednesday 17th
- Thursday 18th
Course fee:
Lm30. Includes attendance at lecture sessions; folder containing course materials;
coffee/tea breaks.
