TGWU Visiting Lecturer in Workers' Education

Dr John Fisher, Head of the Education Department of the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU) of the United Kingdom, was a guest lecturer in the Faculty of Education, University of Malta, where he taught the half unit, 'Adult Education and Work,' that is offered as part of the coursework for the Master's in Education (M.Ed.) degree with specialization in Adult Education.  Dr Fisher focused in his lectures on the area of workers' education with specific reference to trade union education.

Dr Fisher's visit was sponsored by the General Workers' Union.  Five officials of the General Workers' Union attended the course in addition to the eight persons enrolled in the M.Ed. Adult Education programme, a Ph.D. candidate in Adult Education and an exchange student from the University of Waikato in New Zealand.  This allowed for a healthy exchange between educators, pursuing the Masterís degree course, and practitioners in the trade union field.

Dr Fisher has a wealth of experience in the area of workers' education and adult education in general having previously held an academic appointment in the Department of Education Studies at the University of Surrey, a department which is well known throughout Europe for its strong adult education programme.  He has been to Malta on previous occasions, as guest of the General Workers' Union, to carry out short courses and workshops for trade union personnel.
