THE EMU AND THE NEW EU MEMBER STATES:
SOME LESSONS FOR AND FROM THE DEVELOPING WORLD

The Economics Department and the Islands and Small States Institute at the Foundation for International Studies, University of Malta in collaboration with EADI (European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes) will be organizing a one-day Symposium on the Economic and Monetary Union of the EU at the Foundation for International Studies, Valletta. The symposium will be held on Friday, 23 April 2004 between 0900hrs and 1700hrs with a break for lunch.

The objective of the symposium are to discuss a number of themes associated with the EMU and its impact on economic development. The themes include fiscal discipline and development, sound Macroeconomic policies, the effect of EMU on developing countries, and the need or otherwise of revising the Maastricht Criteria.

The European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes, which is coordinating the symposium, is an international organization, with an active network of 150 organisations and 11 working groups addressing key issues in Development Research, Training and Information.

The network is managed from a central Secretariat in Bonn, Germany. The
Executive Committee of EADI is drawn from many European countries, including Malta.
