Philosophy Society Meeting

Truth in the Sciences

At the next meeting of the Philosophy Society, being held on Thursday 22 April 2004, at the Erin Serracino Inglott Hall at 7pm, Professor Francois Rivenc will talk about Truth in the Sciences.

There is at present a major controversy in the Philosophy of Science:  What are scientific theories about?  On the one hand, Realists say that they are descriptions of the world.  On the other hand, Pragmatist Empiricists say that they are mental constructions useful as guides to effective behaviour.  Can the philosophy of logic and of language contribute to clarification of the debate?

Professor Francois Rivenc holds the chair of Logic and Language at the University of Paris I Pantheon, Sorbonne.  He is the author of several books on Logic, Contemporary Theories of Meaning and Truth and on Carnap.

Professor Alex Felice will open the discussion.

Pizza and wine, at a nominal charge, will be served at the Farmhouse after the discussion.  The general public is cordially invited to attend.
