A Modern Requiem

Volcano Theatre Company is being brought to Malta by the British Council in collaboration with Koperattiva Kulturali Universitarja (KKU) and  St James Cavalier.

'This Imaginary Woman' is a powerful and passionate show: a journey from loss and mourning to resolution and acceptance. It is a haunting celebration of someone who was not famous or important like most of us, but who lived, died and left people behind.

This modern requiem recounts the story of a daughter coming to terms with the death of her mother. It is autobiography. brave and beautiful, honest and angry. The themes are memory, death and bereavement.

Written, composed and performed by Patrick Fitzgerald and Fern Smith, this show is a cabaret influenced by contemporary female performance artists and vocalists such as Patti Smith, Laurie Anderson, and Diamanda Gallas and by composers such as Kurt Weill and Jaques Brel.

Fern Smith is an incredibly compelling peformer. Her roles have included Medea in Medea, SexWar, The Dark Lady in L.O.V.E.,  Lady Macbeth in Macbeth: Director’s Cut and Mary Magdalen in Stephen Berkoff’s Messiah. She is co-founder of Volcano Theatre Company.

Patrick Fitzgerald plays electronically affected piano and guitar live. This is intelligent song writing. Eloquent, atmospheric and melodic. From the sacred minimalism of Arvo Part to the brash sexy rock of P.J. Harvey. Patrick was the lead singer and songwriter with the acclaimed band Kitchens of Distinction and now has a solo career under the alias of Stephen Hero.

Volcano is an international touring thetre company with a reputation for unpredictable and arresting theatre that combines strong visual impact and physical presence. The company has toured worldwide with acclaimed productions such as TalkSexShow, Private Lives, Macbeth-Director’s Cut and L.O.V.E.

The performance is being held at MITP theatre in St Christopher Street Valletta, while the tickets, at Lm5, are available from St James Cavalier. Further information may be obtained from St James Cavalier on telephone number 21 223200 or e-mail: boxoffice@sjcav.org
