Opening of the Academic Year 2005-2006 This year, 3,605 Maltese applicants filed 4,874 applications (this because many applied for more than one course). The number of applicants accepted to date is 2285 while, to date, 637 have not been accepted.*
At present, the Admissions Office is working to process 1227 applications from persons who sat for the MATSEC September Supplementary Session. These resit results were recently published and such applicants have been advised that in case of a positive result which should qualify them for the course of their choice, they can attend lectures even before they receive their official letter of acceptance.
A number of courses are opening for the first time this year. The new undergraduate courses are Certificate in Youth Ministry; Pre-Tertiary Faculty Certificate in Youth Ministry; Bachelor of Library, Information and Archive Studies; Diploma in Archive and Records Management. The courses for further studies are: Master of Science in Integrated Product Development; Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies; Master of Arts in Comparative Euro-Mediterranean Education Studies.
Amongst the international students, the three most popular courses are Bachelor Commerce; Bachelor of Arts in Tourism and Bachelor of Arts.
The countries that provide the largest number of students are the People's Republic of China and Bulgaria.
This year the international students hail from all over Europe from 74 different nations. They will be following courses in almost all the faculties, the most popular being Faculty of Economics, Management & Accountancy. Most of the Erasmus students will be here in Malta for one semester.
This year the international students have been offered a two-day orientation programme including contact with both the Kunsill Studenti Universitarji and the University Administration. Both Maltese and International students have access to university internet and email facilities through the Computing Services Centre. This year the hourly bus service has again been introduced and students are being encouraged to avail themselves of the service.
Between today, Opening of the New Academic Year and Wednesday 5 th October an interesting on campus programme is being organised by the Kunsill Studenti Universtarji for Freshers; this includes music unplugged, debates and other activities.
