Building the Economic Resilience of Small States

The  Commonwealth Secretariat together with the Economics Department and the Islands and Small States Institute of the University of Malta will
be organising an international workshop on žBuilding the Economic Resilience of Small StatesÓ between 7 and 9 March 2005. The three-day
workshop will be held at the University Gozo Centre, Mgarr Road, Xewkija, Gozo.

The objectives of the workshop are to identify economic, social, environmental and governance factors that promote economic resilience building in
small states and to propose measures which strengthen economic resilience and enable small states to manage their inherent economic
vulnerability. The workshop will also propose ways in which a resilience index can be constructed so as to support decision-making, set targets and
establish benchmarks, monitor and evaluate developments, provide quantitative estimates, and disseminate information.

The workshop will be attended by 20 scholars and expert practitioners from different countries and different international organization including the
World Bank, the Indian Ocean Commission, the Alliance of Small Islands States and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Members of the press and the broadcasting media are invited to attend the opening session scheduled to be held on Monday 7 March 2005 at
9.00a.m. The Minister for Gozo will address the participants on Wednesday morning.
