Scholarship offer by Hofstra University, New York The University of Malta is pleased to announce that, on the initiative of the Hon. Frank G. Zarb, the Zarb School of Business at Hofstra University, New York State, is offering a four-year scholarship to a Maltese student, for the second year in succession.

Frank G. Zarb is an outstanding American national of Maltese descent who has had a distinguished career in government, banking and financial institutions. After occupying several high profile positions in the energy sector, Mr. Zarb served as Chairman of the National Association of Securities Dealers and of its stock market NASDAQ. More recently, Mr. Zarb was appointed by Governor George E. Pataki to head the Commission on Education Reform in the State of New York as well as member of the Board of Directors of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, an organisation charged with overseeing the development of the Downtown New York City area following the September 11th World Trade Center attacks. He is currently Acting Chairman of AIG - the American International Group - which is one of the largest insurance firms in the world.

Frank Zarb is a former student of Hofstra University and the School of Business was named after him in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the world of business.

The scholarship is for a period of up to four years and is intended for an advanced University of Malta undergraduate student in business, management, accountancy or information technology. The scholarship is meant to enable the student to complete the four-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program at Hofstra and then proceed to the Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the same university, thus earning two degrees at Hofstra. The MBA is typically three semesters in duration, following receipt of the BBA.  Possible majors at Hofstra include accounts, business, computer information systems, entrepreneurship, finance, international business, management and marketing.

The selected student will be expected to commence studies at Hofstra in September 2005.

Interested students should submit an application to be received by not later than Friday 29 April 2005 to Mr Joe Grech, Assistant Director, International Office, University of Malta, Msida MSD 06, by e-mail: joe.grech@um.edu.mt, with a hard copy sent by post. Applicants should have finished at least the first year of an undergraduate course in business, management, accountancy or information technology. The application should consist of a typed one-page covering letter, accompanied by a Curriculum Vitae, an up-to-date University transcript, as well as the names and contact details of three persons who have accepted to provide a letter of reference on the applicant.
