Staff Development Seminars The Quality Assurance Committee in collaboration with the Matsec Unit organised an academic staff seminar entitled Promoting Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education held on Monday 16 th January. Professor Roger Murphy, the Director of the Institute for Research into Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (IRLTHE) at the University of Nottingham, UK led a discussion of institutional strategies for promoting excellence in teaching and learning in higher education. His presentation and follow-up discussion dealt with the consideration of teaching prizes, certificated course for new lecturers, and models for sharing innovative teaching approaches between experienced academics. This was a highly successful seminar with thought provoking ideas, it was inspiring and very well attended.
This was the first in a series of staff seminars that will be held in the coming months. The next seminar, by Dr Gorg Mallia will deal with PowerPoint in Lectures- for Beginning and Infrequent Users. It will be held on the 25th and 26th of January and 2 nd February at 13.00 to 17.00 at the CCT Computer Lab (Room 101). The three seminars will be an introduction to the use of PowerPoint 2003 as a presentation aid in lectures. Participants will be helped to produce work which will be presented in the final session. The Quality Assurance Committee plans to organize other seminars which will be announced on NOC, the weekly electronic newsletter sent to all University staff and students.
