New M.Ed. Specialisation: M.Ed. in Mathematics Education In October 2007, the University of Malta Faculty of Education will be offering a Masters in Mathematics Education as part of its MEd degree programme. This new two-year MEd specialisation will be offered on a part-time basis, and will consist of ten taught study-units during the first year and a dissertation to be carried out under tutorial supervision during the second year.

The aim of this course is to engage participants in issues related to mathematics education, particularly those that are relevant to the primary and secondary sectors. Applicants are expected to have a good first degree in education (with specialisation in mathematics or primary education), or equivalent qualifications.

The taught component of the MEd in Mathematics Education course will consist of five compulsory study-units, which are common to all MEd students, and five specialised mathematics education study-units.

The specialised mathematics education study-units will be:

• The Philosophy and Sociology of Mathematics Education
• Perspectives on Learning Mathematics
• Doing and Evaluating Research in Mathematics Education
• Curriculum Developments in Mathematics
• The Professional Mathematics Teacher
