Dr Byron Baron completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Malta in 2006 and proceeded to read for his Ph.D., which he obtained in 2011. He then completed a post-doctoral project on the METTL-family methyltransferase 23 in 2014.
Dr Baron joined the Centre for Molecular Medicine and Biobanking in 2015 and is involved in a wide array of research projects both locally and abroad, with his main interest being lysine methylation in non-histone proteins. These studies are driven forward through collaborations with teams in the UK, Germany and Japan.
The basic science research currently undertaken by Dr Baron centres around the characterisation of the METTL-family enzymes, while the translational research projects focus on evaluating the role of selected protein methylations and determining their potential as diagnostic biomarkers for a variety of conditions including cancer, diabetes and pre-eclampsia.
