Prof. Cyril Spiteri Staines graduated with a First Class B.Eng. degree from the University of Malta in 1994. He commenced duties at the University of Malta in 1995. Also in 1995 he was awarded a Commonwealth scholarship to carry out a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Nottingham, U.K. In 1998 he successfully obtained his Ph.D. degree and was promoted to Lecturer. He was promoted to grade of Senior Lecturer in 2004, to Associate Professor in 2007 and to Full Professor in 2014. From 2007 till 2011 he was Head of Department of the Industrial Electrical Power Conversion (IEPC) of the Faculty of Engineering.

During 2003-2004 Prof. Spiteri Staines was a visiting scholar at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nottingham. During this period, apart from supervising various Masters and Ph.D. students at Nottingham, he also carried out post-doctoral research work concerned with the sensorless speed and position control of induction machines. He worked on a novel technique developed at Nottingham, by which low and zero speed/frequency operation of an induction machine is possible.

In 2007, in collaboration with Prof. Kennel he organised in Malta 2007 the First International workshop on Sensorless Control for Electrical Drives – this evolved in the prestigious IEEE SLED symposium. In 2008, Prof. Spiteri Staines was responsible for the setting up of the ERDF funded Electrical Energy & Efficiency (EEE) Lab of the IEPC. He has written various research funding applications, his most recent awarded funding was 'Electrical Energy System Optimisation for the More Electric Aircraft'. He has published over 100 technical papers most of which are peer reviewed journal or conference papers. His current research interests are related to Sensorless and High performance control of Electrical Machines, Microgrids, Design of Power Electronic Converters, Energy Efficiency and the grid-connection and control of Renewable Energy Sources (RES).

Prof. Spiteri Staines is a Senior Member of the IEEE, a member of the IET. He is a committee member of the MGPEI and is Vice-president of SBE-Malta.
