Dr Mario R Sammut was appointed Assistant Lecturer within the Department of Family Medicine on its inception in 2001 at the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery, University of Malta Medical School. In 2009 he was promoted to Visiting Senior Lecturer. During 2001-2011 he represented the Department of Family Medicine on the Faculty Board of Medicine and Surgery.

Dr Sammut obtained his MD in 1984 and a DipHSc and MScH (both in Health Services Management) in 2001 & 2003 respectively. He was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Family Medicine by the Specialist Accreditation Committee - Malta in 2003, his MMCFD as full Member of the Malta College of Family Doctors in 2006 and his Fellowship of the College in 2015. In 2007 Dr Sammut was conferred a Masters of Science with distinction in Primary Care & General Practice by the University of Ulster and in 2017 he was accepted as an International Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Until retirement in 2023, Dr Sammut was Principal General Practitioner within Primary HealthCare in Malta, where he was Postgraduate Training Coordinator in Family Medicine. He was member of Council of the Malta College of Family Doctors during 1992-2006 (being Hon. Secretary in 1994-2003), and member of the Coordinating Group of EUROPREV - European Network for Prevention and Health Promotion in General Practice/Family Medicine during 1999-2013 (being its Public Relations Officer in 2011-13). Dr Sammut was member of Council of EURACT - European Academy of Teachers in General Practice/Family Medicine during 2004-19, Executive Board member in 2010-19 and Honorary Secretary during 2013-19.

Dr Sammut's special interests are Medical Education and Health Promotion. He has published over thirty peer-reviewed papers, other articles, publications and reports (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=UCPnLkgAAAAJ&hl=en). Dr Sammut is Editor of the Journal of the Malta College of Family Doctors. He has spoken at local and international conferences and reviewed submissions to the Malta Medical Journal and international journals, and the Malta Medical School Conference and European Conferences of WONCA - World Organisation of Family Doctors.
