Maltese 19th century communities of North Africa often became French-speaking.  The manuscripts of Eugène Fenech are kept by his descendants who for over a century lived in Philippeville (today Skikda).  These memoirs concern particularly political and medical history.  Eugèneís father, Calcedonio, was
deeply involved in the dramatic events that ovetook Malta during the summer of 1798.  In 1813, Eugène obtained a degree from the Paris Faculty of Medicine.
