EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)
Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Diploma in Agriculture - Dip. Agric. - under the auspices of the Institute of Agriculture
IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and 31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws made by the Board of the Institute of Agriculture in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:
Citation and Interpretation
1. (1) These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Diploma in Agriculture - Dip. Agric. - under the auspices of the Institute of Agriculture.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Institute of Agriculture;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed for the Course;
"the Course" means the course programme leading to the Diploma in Agriculture Dip. Agric.;
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Agriculture Dip. Agric.;
"the Institute" means the Institute of Agriculture; and
"the Principal Regulations" means the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004.
Applicability
2. These bye-laws shall be applicable for courses commencing in October 2003 or later.
Special Course Requirements for Admission
3. To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall, apart from satisfying the entry requirements for admission in terms of the Admission Regulations of the University, be in possession of passes at Advanced Matriculation Level in Biology and Chemistry.
4. To be admitted as provisional students in the preparatory course specifically related to the proposed course of study, applicants shall be in possession of:
(a) six passes at grade 5 or better at Secondary Education Certificate Level, including Maltese, English Language, Mathematics and a science subject; or
(b) a diploma obtained from the College of Agriculture of the Department of Education with a grade of merit or better, or a similar qualification which, in the opinion of the Board, is equivalent to this qualification."
Preparatory Course Programme
5. (1) The preparatory course extends over a period of one year of full-time studies and shall consist of study units to which 60 credits are assigned.
(2) The Board shall publish the programme of study for the preparatory course, drawn up in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Principal Regulations, and approved by Senate, at the commencement of each Course. Subject to changes that the Board may, with the approval of Senate, be cons trained to make, students are bound to follow the study-units and obtain the credits as indicated in the programme of study.
Diploma Course Programme
6. The Course shall extend over a period of one academic year of full-time study.
7. (1) The Course programme shall consist of:
a) taught study units to which 54 credits are assigned; and
(b) an agricultural project in a chosen subject area leading to a project report of 5000 words on an approved topic, to which 6 credits are assigned.
(2) In any year of the Course, students may not register for study-units to which more than 60 credits are assigned unless they are required to register for referred study-units in terms of regulation 54 of the principal regulations.
(3) The Board shall publish the programme of study for the Diploma, drawn up in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Principal Regulations, and approved by Senate, at the commencement of each Course. Subject to changes that the Board may, with the approval of Senate, be constrained to make, students are bound to follow the study-units and obtain the credits as indicated in the programme of study.
Classification of the Award
8. The names of students who qualify for the award of the Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:
