EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)

Regulations for the Degree of Master of Arts - M.A. - in Baroque Studies, 1998

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30 (5) and 31 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following Regulations made by the Senate of the University of Malta by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by sections 31 and 35 of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Regulations for the Degree of Master of Arts - M.A. - in Baroque Studies, 1998.

(2) In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -

"Board" means the Board of the International Institute for Baroque Studies;

"the Course" means the Course leading to the Degree of Master of Arts in Baroque Studies MA;

"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Arts in Baroque Studies MA.

Applicability

2. These Regulations shall apply to courses starting in October 1996 or thereafter.

Eligibility for Admission

3. (1) Candidates may register for the Course normally if they possess a Bachelor's degree awarded with Second Class Honours or an equivalent qualification in a subject/s acceptable to the Board, from this or any other university recognised by the Senate for the purpose, provided that candidates in possession of a degree awarded at lower than Second Class Honours may be admitted subject to any other condition, including the condition to follow a preparatory or supplementary programme of studies as directed by the Board, in order for such candidates to be given the opportunity to reach Second Class Honours standard.

(2) All applicants must before being admitted to register for the Course be approved by the Board, on the recommendation of the Co-ordinator of the Course, as possessing the training, knowledge, and capabilities required for the Course.

Course Duration

4. Students for the Degree shall be required:

(a) to follow on a full-time basis and successfully complete at least eight study-units, the contents of which shall be determined by the Board, and approved by Senate, on the recommendation by the Co-Ordinator of the Course; and

(b) to present a written dissertation on a subject approved by the Board on the recommendation of the Co-ordinator of the Course not less than 15 and not more than 24 calendar months after registration. The Board may, before the presentation of the dissertation, extend the twenty-four month period for one further period not exceeding six calendar months.

Supervision of Dissertation

5. The Board shall appoint a supervisor for every student. The student shall report to the supervisor at least once every two months and in addition as often as the supervisor deems necessary. The supervisor may refer to the Board, a student whose work he considers unsatisfactory and shall refer for the approval of the Board, any substantial modification in the title or content of the proposed dissertation. No dissertation shall be submitted to the examiners without the certificate, signed by the supervisor, that the student conformed with these regulations.

Title of Dissertation

6. A student for the Degree shall be required to propose, within four months of the commencement of the Course, a particular subject for his dissertation; the subject shall fall within the field of one or more of the offered areas of study and the research proposal shall be as detailed as possible so that the Board may be able to assess its suitability.

Contents of Dissertation

7. (1) Every dissertation shall:

(a) be either a record of original work or an ordered and critical expression of existing data on a particular subject;

(b) satisfy the relevant Board as regards language and literary presentation; and

(c) fulfill all specifications under Regulation 7(2) as regards length and Regulation 8 as regards format.

(2) The dissertation shall not be less than 20,000 words and not more than 25,000 words, including footnotes but excluding bibliography and appendices.

(3) No dissertation shall be accepted which is identical in substance with dissertation already submitted for a degree in this or any other University recognised by the Senate. No candidate, however, shall be precluded from incorporating such already submitted dissertation work as may be necessary to the presentation and fuller understanding of his exposition, provided that the nature and extent of such incorporated work are clearly indicated in the dissertation itself.

Presentation of Dissertation

8. Regulation 8 of the Degree of Master of Arts - MA - Regulations, 1992, regulating the presentation of dissertation, shall also regulate the presentation of the dissertation for the Degree.

Final Examinations

9. (1) The form of the Final Examination shall be as follows:

(a) Part I: Four written papers, each of three hours duration, on all the areas of study covered by the Course;

(b) Part II: (i) Dissertation;

               (ii) A viva voce examination on the dissertation and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls.

(2) A student shall not qualify for the Degree if he does not pass both parts of the Final Examination.

Examiners

10. Both the four written papers, referred to in regulation 9(1) above, and the dissertation shall be examined by a board of not less than three examiners, one of whom shall normally be an external examiner from another University recognised by the Senate.

Re-submission of Dissertation

11. A student whose dissertation is found unsatisfactory may be allowed by the Board, on the recommendation of the examiners, to re-submit it in revised form within a period of not less than six calendar months from the day on which it is referred back to him.

Resit

12. A student who fails Part I of the Final Examination may be allowed to resit that part of the Final Examination once, under such conditions as the Board may determine.

Final Result

13. (1) The Final Result of each student shall take into account the result of the four written papers, which shall carry 40% of the weighting, the merits of his dissertation and its oral defence by the student which shall carry 40% of the weighting, and his performance during the Course, which shall carry the other 20%.

(2) Successful candidates shall qualify for the Degree and their names shall be published in alphabetical order classified as follows:

Passed with Distinction
Passed.
