EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)

Regulations for the Selection of Applicants for Admission to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery - B.Ch.D. - Degree Course, 2004


IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30 (5) and 31 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following regulations made by the Senate of the University of Malta by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by sections 31 and 35 of the said Act:

Citation and interpretation

1. (1) These regulations may be cited as the Regulations for the Selection of Applicants for Admission to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery - B.Ch.D. - Degree Course, 2004.

(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -

"the Course" means the Course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery - B.Ch.D.

Applicability

2. These regulations shall apply to courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery - B.Ch.D. - commencing in October 2004 or later.

Selection of Applicants

3. The number of students that may be admitted to the Course shall be limited as provided in terms of the provisions of these regulations.

4. The number of students shall be limited to six Maltese and other E.U. nationals and two students from non-E.U. countries."The number of students shall be limited to six students.

5. In order to be admitted into the Course applicants must satisfy the requirements for registration as regular students of the University as specified in the Admission Regulations and any other requirements for admission to the Course as specified in all the regulations for the Course.

6. If there are more than six eligible applicants of Maltese and other E.U. states nationality, the best six applicants shall be selected by the University Admissions Board, after seeking the advice of the Admissions Committee of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, in accordance with the criteria for selection as specified in regulation 7.

Criteria for Selection

7. (1) The Faculty Admissions Committee shall first consider eligible applicants whose qualifications were obtained in theMatriculation Certificate Examination, or from another examining board if the Faculty Admissions Committee is satisfied that the qualifications presented are comparable in content and equivalent in standard to the Matriculation Certificate Examination in the same subject and, for courses commencing in October 2006 or later, first preference being given to applicants whose qualifications are obtained from one examining board. These applicants shall be placed in categories following the criteria listed hereunder:

(a) Grades obtained in the following subjects at the level indicated shall be considered first:

(i) Chemistry at Advanced Level and Biology at Advanced Level, hereafter referred to as the primary subjects; and

(ii) Physics, at either Advanced or Intermediate Level, hereafter referred to as the secondary subject.

(b) A grade obtained in the secondary subject taken at Advanced Level, shall, for the purpose of selection, be given the same value as the same grade obtained in the secondary subject at Intermediate Level.

(c) Applicants in possession of the General Entry Requirements, may offer passes in the primary subjects and/or in the secondary subject, either as part of the General Entry Requirements or in addition to the General Entry Requirements.

(d) When applicants present more than one pass in the same subject, the best grade shall be taken into consideration.

(e) For the purpose of selection, a pass obtained in a session of examinations which is held after the results of a previous session were published, shall be deemed to be a pass obtained in a session that is distinct from the previous one. This regulation shall also apply to the supplementary session of the Matriculation Certificate Examination offered by the MATSEC Board of the University of Malta according to the provisions of the Matriculation Certificate Examination Regulations and this notwithstanding any other regulation governing the award of the Matriculation Certificate.

 

(f) the Qualification Categories shall be the following:

1st Category: those with 2 `A's in the primary subjects and an `A' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

2nd Category: those with 2 `A's in the primary subjects and a `B' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

3rd Category: those with 2 `A's in the primary subjects and a `C' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

and
those with 1 `A' and 1 `B' in the primary subjects and an `A' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

4th Category: those with 1'A' and 1 `B' in the primary subjects and a `B' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

5th Category: those with 1 `A' and 1 `B' in the primary subjects and a `C' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

and
those with 2 `B's in the primary subjects and an `A' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

6th Category: those with 2 `B's in the primary subjects and a `B' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

7th Category:
those with 2 `B's in the primary subjects and a `C' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

8th Category: those with 1 `A' and 1 `C' in the primary subjects and an `A' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

9th Category: those with 1 `A' and 1 `C' in the primary subjects and a `B' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

10th Category: those with 1 `A' and 1 `C' in the primary subjects and a `C' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

11th Category: those with 1 `B' and 1 `C' in the primary subjects and an `A' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

12th Category: those with 1 `B' and 1 `C' in the primary subjects and a `B' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

13th Category: those with 1 `B' and 1 `C' in the primary subjects and a `C' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

14th Category: those with 2 `C's in the primary subjects and an `A' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

15th Category: those with 2 `C's in the primary subjects and a `B' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

16th Category: those with 2 `C's in the primary subjects and a `C' in the secondary subject obtained in one session

(2) The Faculty Admissions Committee shall then call for an interview not less than 10 applicants from those placed in the upper categories, provided that if one applicant in a category is called for an interview all the applicants falling in the same category shall be called.

(3) The Faculty Admissions Committee shall put the applicants in a final order of merit after considering their aptitude, motivation, communication skills and overall academic background and submit a detailed report and their final recommendations for the selection of the six applicants to the University Admissions Board. The Faculty Admissions Committee may be assisted by any experts they deem necessary when conducting the selection interviews.

(4) The two places reserved for non-E.U. nationals, in terms of regulation 4 of the principal regulations, shall be filled on the recommendation of the Faculty Admissions Committee that may first consider eligible applicants recommended in terms of agreements the University may enter into with foreign institutions or governments.
