EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)

Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - B.A. (Hons) - Youth and Community Studies - under the auspices of the Faculty of Education

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and 31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws made by the Board of the Faculty of Education in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:

Citation and interpretation

1. (1) These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - B.A. (Hons) - Youth and Community Studies - under the auspices of the Faculty of Education.

(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -

"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education; and

"the Course" means the course programme leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - B.A. (Hons) - Youth and Community Studies.

Applicability

2. These bye-laws shall be applicable for courses commencing in October 2003 or later.

Requirements for Admission

3. To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall satisfy the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission Regulations.

Course Duration

4. The Course shall extend over a period of three years of full-time study or five years of part-time study.

5. Students shall be allowed to proceed with the course of studies after having successfully completed the first two years of part-time study (or one year of full-time study when the Course is offered full-time) if they obtain an overall average mark of 55%.

Course Programme

6. The Course shall consist of three levels of 60 credits each:

(a) 78 credits (60 credits at Level 1 and 18 credits at Level 2) are assigned for the first two years of part-time study. When the Course is offered on a full-time basis, 60 credits (Level 1) are assigned for the first year; and

(b) 102 credits (42 credits at Level 2 and 60 credits at Level 3) are assigned for the following three years of part-time study. When the Course is offered on a full-time basis, 60 credits (Level 2) are assigned for the second year and 60 credits (Level 3) are assigned for the third year.

Special Provision for Fieldwork Placement

7. (1) Students who fail the assessment of the first Fieldwork Placement shall be given the opportunity to redo the Placement before the end of the academic year.

(2) Students who fail the assessment of the second or the third Fieldwork Placement shall not have the right to a supplementary assessment. They shall be required to refer the Fieldwork Placement to the following year during which they shall be required to do that Fieldwork Placement only, Provided that students shall be allowed to repeat only one of these two Fieldwork Placements.

Interim Award

8. Students who successfully complete the programme for the first two years of part-time study (or one year of full-time study when the Course is offered on a full-time basis) and who either opt not to proceed with the Course or having proceeded, do not successfully complete the following three years of part-time study (or two years of full-time study when the Course is offered on a full-time basis) shall be entitled to the award of the Diploma in Youth Studies.

Classification of the Award

9. The overall evaluation of each student's performance in the Course for the purpose of the classification shall be based on the results obtained in each year of the Course, all credits being weighted equally.
