EDUCATION ACT (CAP 327)

Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Diploma in Education (Individual Educational Needs) under the auspices of the Faculty of Education

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and 31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws made by the Board of the Faculty of Education in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Diploma in Education (Individual Educational Needs) under the auspices of the Faculty of Education

(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -

"the Course" means the course of studies leading to the Diploma in Education (Individual Educational Needs); and

"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Education (Individual Educational Needs).

Applicability

2. These bye-laws shall be applicable for the Course commencing in October 2003.

Special Course Requirements for Admission

3. To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall, apart from satisfying the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission Regulations, be in possession of the special course requirements listed hereunder:

(a) be in possession of the Faculty Certificate in Education (Learning Support Facilitators);

(b) have two years' experience in facilitation; and

(c) be employed as facilitators supporting a child/children with special educational needs in either mainstream or special schools during the whole run of the Course.

Course Duration

4. The Course shall extend over one year of part-time study.

Course Programme

5. The Course shall consist of study-units, to which 30 credits are assigned as follows:

(a) a number of taught study-units to which 20 credits shall be assigned;

(b) a study-unit comprising a supervised individual project to which 4 credits shall be assigned; and

(c) a study-unit comprising a practice placement to which 6 credits shall be assigned.

Classification of the Award

6. The overall evaluation of each student's performance in the Course for the purpose of the classification of the Diploma shall be based on the results obtained in the Course, all credits earned being weighted equally.
