EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)

Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - B.Eng. (Hons) under the auspices of the Faculty of Engineering

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and 31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws made by the Board of the Faculty of Engineering in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - B.Eng. (Hons) - under the auspices of the Faculty of Engineering.

(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -

"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Engineering;

"the Course" means the course of studies leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - B.Eng. (Hons);

"the Degree" means the Degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - B.Eng. (Hons); and

"the Principal Regulations" means the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004.

Applicability

2. These bye-laws shall be applicable for courses commencing in October 2003 or later.

Special Course Requirements for Admission

3. To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall, apart from satisfying the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission Regulations, be in possession of the special course requirements listed hereunder:

(a) passes at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics and in Physics; or,

(b) in terms of regulation 6 of the Admission Regulations, be in possession of:

(i) five passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination including English Language and Maltese; and

(ii) a pass in Systems of Knowledge at Intermediate Matriculation Level; and

(iii) either a Higher Technician Diploma of the City and Guilds of London Institute Course No. 8000 in Electrical Engineering, or a qualification considered by the Board to be equivalent, and a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level in Physics at Grade C or better;
or a Higher Technician Diploma of the City and Guilds of London Institute Course No. 8000 in Mechanical Engineering, or a qualification considered by the Board to be equivalent, and a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level in Pure Mathematics at Grade C or better;

or the Diploma in Industrial Electronics of the Fellenberg Training Centre, awarded with credit, and a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level in Physics at Grade C or better;

or if applicants are graduates of a university or have other qualifications considered to be sufficient, they may be exempted by the University Admissions Board, on the advice of the Faculty Admissions Committee, from the whole or part of these special course requirements.

Course Duration

4. The Course shall extend over a period of four years of full-time study.

Areas of Study

5. The Degree may be awarded in any one of the following areas of study:

Electrical Engineering;
or
Mechanical Engineering.

Course Programme

6. Applicants shall be required to indicate their choice of area of study at the time of applying for admission.

7. The first semester of the first year of the Course shall be common to all students and requests by students to change their area of study shall normally be accepted if submitted at least two weeks before the commencement of the second semester.

8. Notwithstanding the provisions of regulation 45 of the Principal Regulations, in any year of the Course, students shall not be awarded more than 8 credits for study-units passed by compensation and if necessary students shall be required to choose which study-unit/s of the eligible study-units are to be considered as passed by compensation, to a maximum value of 8 credits.

Classification of the Award

9. The overall evaluation of each student's performance shall be based on the results obtained in each year of the Course weighted according to the following criteria:

First Year Average Mark - 10%
Second Year Average Mark - 20%
Third Year Average Mark - 30%
Fourth Year Average Mark - 40%.

10. A Pass degree of Bachelor of Technology ­ B.Tech. ­ shall be awarded to a student who does not qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) ­ B. Eng. (Hons) degree but who obtains a minimum of 180 credits, unless the student is eligible and opts to repeat the fourth year of the Course.
