EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)

Bye-Laws for the Degree of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil. - in the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy, 1998

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30 (5) and 31 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws made by the Board of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These Bye-Laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil. - in the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy, 1998.

(2) In these Bye-Laws, unless the context otherwise requires-

"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy;

"the Course" means the Course of Studies leading to the Degree of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil.;

"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil.

Applicability

2. These Bye-Laws shall apply to courses starting in 1997 or later.

Eligibility for Admission

3. (1) The Course shall be open to candidates who graduated with Honours in the proposed subject as main area of study and who placed in the upper half of the classification in the Final Examinations of this University or another recognised for this purpose by the Senate.

(2) The proposed subject shall be in one of the following main areas of study: Economics, Management, Accountancy, Public Policy, Banking and Finance, Marketing and Social Policy or any other area approved by Senate for this purpose on the recommendation of the Board.

Course Requirements

4. (1) An application shall include evidence of proficiency and a recommendation by the Head of Department concerned and by a member of the academic staff willing to act as supervisor. The Board may lay down additional requirements including the taking of one or more qualifying examinations.

(2) The Board may, in special cases, allow candidates, who do not satisfy the requirements specified in Bye-Law 3 above, to register in terms of Regulation 5(2) of the Ph.D. and M.Phil. Regulations.

(3) The application for registration shall include the title of the proposed dissertation and a brief account of it.

Format and Presentation of Dissertation

5. (1) The length of the dissertation shall not normally exceed 50,000 words unless otherwise specified by the Department concerned.

(2) A student shall be required to submit three copies of the dissertation for examination which shall be adequately bound. Each copy shall contain an abstract of not more than 300 words.

(3) The graduate shall within one month of passing the examination of the dissertation submit three final copies of the dissertation one of which shall be deposited at the University Library. These final copies shall incorporate any amendments requested by the examiners during the oral examination.

(4) The dissertation shall comply with the format and presentation rules for dissertations approved by the Board.
