EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)

Bye-Laws for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - in the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy , 1998

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30 (5) and 31 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of
the University of Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws made by the Board of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These Bye-Laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - in the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy, 1998.

(2) In these Bye-Laws, unless the context otherwise requires-

"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy;

"the Degree" means the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D;

"the Faculty" means the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy.

Applicability

2. These Bye-Laws shall apply to courses starting in 1997 or later.

Registration

3. A candidate registering for the Degree shall satisfy the following Bye-Laws in addition to the requirements laid down in the Regulations for the Degree:

(1) A candidate shall normally be required, before registering for the Degree, to register in the first instance for the degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in the Faculty. A candidate shall be considered eligible for direct registration for the Degree only in exceptional circumstances.

(2) The upgrading of registration from the degree of M.Phil. to the Degree shall not be permitted before the expiry of 15 months of full-time study or 30 months of part-time study, as the case may be, after registration for the degree of M.Phil., and only on the recommendation of the candidate's supervisor supported by the Head of Department and the approval of the Board.

(3) A candidate shall be required to register every twelve months, on the written recommendation of the supervisor, supported by the Head of Department.

(4) The candidate shall also submit with his application a research proposal of approximately 3,000 words in length. The research proposal shall indicate the precise area of research, the research questions, the hypotheses to be tested, the methodology to be adopted and in particular what is novel about the proposed research. Where necessary, a candidate may be required to demonstrate competence in those skills required by the related nature of the investigation.

(5) The Board shall ensure to recommend supervisor that has the required expertise in the particular field of knowledge.

(6) The supervisor, proposed by applicant in terms of Regulation 4(2) of the Ph.D. Regulations, shall be approved by the Board on the recommendation of the Department within which the research proposal falls, prior to the submission of the application to the Senate Ph.D. Committee.

(7) Registered students may be required to participate fully in the Faculty's research seminars.

Format and Presentation of Thesis

4. (1) The length of the thesis shall not exceed 100,000 words, exclusive of bibliographies, appendices and glossaries. In addition a short abstract of not more than 500 words shall be bound with each copy of the dissertation.

(2) Any changes to the title of the thesis shall first be approved by the Board on the written recommendation of the supervisor, supported by the Head of Department, and shall be submitted for the approval of the Senate.

(3) The student shall be required following the Board's permission to present the thesis, given in terms of Regulation 7(1) of the Ph.D Regulations, to submit three loosely bound copies of the thesis to the Faculty Officer for onward transmission to the examiners.


(4) The student shall be required to take another copy of the thesis similarly bound and paginated to the oral examination.

(5) A student shall be required within 6 weeks of passing the examination to submit four final printed copies of the thesis, hard bound and incorporating any amendments requested by the examiners during the oral examination.

(6) The thesis shall comply with the format and presentation as laid down in the Ph.D. Thesis Guidelines as approved by the Board.
