EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327) Bye-Laws of 2006 in
terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards,
2004 for the Diploma in Policing under the auspices of the
Institute of Forensic Studies IN exercise of the powers conferred
upon him by sections 30(5) and 31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the
Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws
made by the Board of the Institute of Forensic Studies in virtue of the
powers conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have
been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by
section 37 (2) of the said Act:
Citation and Interpretation
1. (1) These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws of 2006 in terms
of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the
Diploma in Policing under the auspices of the Institute of Forensic Studies.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires
"the Board" means the Board of the Institute of Forensic Studies;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed by Senate
for the Course;
"the Course" means the course of studies leading to
the Diploma in Policing; and
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in
Policing.
Applicability 2. These bye-laws shall be
applicable to courses starting in October 2006 or later.
Requirements for Admission 3. (1) To be
registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall satisfy the
general entry requirements for admission as specified in the Admission
Regulations of the University.
(2) Applicants nominated by the
Commissioner of Police may be registered as regular students in the Course
in terms of the Admission Regulations of the University if they satisfy the
following requirements:
(a) are in possession of the general entry
requirements for admission as specified in the Admission Regulations of the
University; or
(b) are members of the Malta Police Force holding an
appointment of Sergeant or higher and who are able to demonstrate to the
Board that they are academically able to follow the Course with profit.
Duration of Course 4. The Course shall extend over one
year of full-time study or two years of part-time study.
Course
Programme 5. The Course shall consist of taught study-units to
which a total of 60 credits are assigned.
Programme of Study
6. (1) The Board of Studies shall draw up the programme of study for
the Course which shall indicate the study-units to be followed in each
semester and which study-units are compulsory, concurrent or pre-requisites
for other study-units. The Board of Studies shall publish the programme of
study for the Course prior to its commencement, following the approval of
Senate.
(2) The level, code, title, description and type of each
study-unit, the number of credits assigned to each study-unit, the methods
of teaching and assessment, and the name of the lecturer giving the
study-unit shall be published in a catalogue of study-units, which shall be
published by the Board of Studies, following approval by Senate.
(3)
Subject to changes that the Board of Studies may, with the approval of
Senate, be constrained to make, students are bound to follow the study-units
and obtain the credits as indicated in the programme of study.
Classification of the Award 7. (1) The
Final Weighted Average Mark for the classification of the Diploma shall be
based on the results obtained in all the study-units of the Course, which shall
be weighted according to the number of credits assigned to them.

The names of students who qualify for the award of the Diploma shall be
published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:
Passed
with Distinction
Passed.
