EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327) Bye-Laws for the Degree of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil. - in the Islands and Small States Institute, 1998 IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30 (5) and 31 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following Bye-Laws made by the Islands and Small States Institute in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:
Citation and Interpretation 1. (1) These Bye-Laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil. - in the Islands and Small States Institute, 1998.
(2) In these Bye-Laws, unless the context otherwise requires:
"the Board" means the Board of the Islands and Small States Institute
"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil.
Applicability 2. These Bye-Laws shall apply from July 1995 onwards.
Registration 3. (1) Applications shall be open to candidates who have obtained an honours degree, at the level of second class upper or higher, from this or another University recognised for this purpose by Senate, in a subject which in the opinion of the Board is closely related to the theme of the research proposal of the candidate.
(2) The Board may, in special circumstances, allow a candidate who does not satisfy the requirements specified in Bye-law 3(1) to register. The application of the candidate shall, in this case, include evidence that the candidate is competent to carry out the research necessary to complete the Degree.
(3) The Board may establish additional requirements, including that the candidate sits for one or more qualifying examinations.
(4) The application for registration must include the title of the proposed dissertation and a brief description of its proposed contents, together with a recommendation by a member of the academic staff who accepts to act as supervisor.
Dissertation 4. (1) The M.Phil. dissertation must incorporate the results of the candidate's own research and observations.
(2) The dissertation shall not exceed 50,000 words unless otherwise specified by the Board. The dissertation shall incorporate an abstract of not more than 500 words. The text must be typed or printed on A4 sheets, on one side only, in double spacing, and the presentation must follow a giudeline of style acceptable to the supervisor.
(3) The student shall be required to submit three copies of the dissertation for examination by the Board of Examiners.
(4) The student shall submit after the oral examination, and after incorporating any amendments as the Board of Examiners may require, two additional copies of the dissertation, hard bound. The title of the dissertation, the name of the candidate, the designation of the degree and the date on which the candidate was admitted to the Degree, shall be printed on the front cover. One of the additional copies shall be deposited in the Library of the University and the other in the library of the Institute.
