EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)

Bye-Laws for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - in Islands and Small States Institute, 1998

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and 31)6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following Bye-Laws made by the Board of the Islands and Small States Institute in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by section 37(1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:

Citation and interpretation

1. (1) These Bye-Laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - in the Islands and Small States Institute, 1998.

(2) In these Bye-Laws, unless the context otherwise requires -

"the Board" means the Board of the Islands and Small States Institute;

"the Course" means the Course leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.";

"the Degree" means the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.;

"the M.Phil. and Ph.D. Committee" means the Committee appointed by Senate as prescribed in regulation 4 of the Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - and Master of Philosophy - M.Phil.- Degrees Course Regulations, 1997.

Applicability

2. These bye-laws shall be applicable from July 1995 onwards.

Registration

3. (1) A candidate shall satisfy the following Bye-Laws in addition to the requirements specified in the Regulations for the Degree in order to register for the course:

(a) obtain a Master's degree from the University of Malta in a subject which in the opinion of the Board of the Islands and Small States Institute is closely related to the theme of the research proposal of the candidate; and

(b) obtain an equivalent qualification as approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Board.

(2) The Board may request the candidate to follow additional courses at the undergraduate or postgraduate level to ensure that he is competent to carry out the research necessary to complete the Doctor of Philosophy Programme.

(3) A candidate who wishes to follow the Programme leading to a Degree shall normally be required to register in the first instance for the Master of Philosophy degree (M.Phil.). The upgrading of the registration from M.Phil. to the Degree shall not be permitted before the expiry of 12 months of full-time study or 24 months of part-time study after the registration for the M.Phil. and on the recommendation of the student supervisor with the approval of the Board.

(4) A student who is allowed to transfer from the M.Phil. course to the Course shall not normally be awarded an M.Phil. degree.

Thesis Format and Presentation

4. (1) The Degree thesis must incorporate the results of the student's own research and observations.

(2) The thesis shall not normally be less than 35,000 words and shall not exceed 60,000 words, exclusive of appendices, bibliographies, glossaries and footnotes. The thesis shall incorporate an abstract of not more than 500 words. The text must be typed or printed on A4 sheets, on one side only, in double spacing, while the presentation must follow a guideline of style acceptable to the supervisor.

(3) The student shall be required to submit three copies of the thesis for examination by the Board of Examiners.

(4) The candidate shall submit, after the oral examination, and after incorporating any amendments as the Board of Examiners may require two additional hard bound copies of the thesis. The title of the thesis, the name of the student, the designation of the degree and the date on which the candidate was admitted to the Degree, shall be printed on the front cover. One of the additional copies shall be deposited in the library of the University of Malta and the other in the library of the Institute.
