EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)

Bye-Laws of 2005 for the Degrees of Doctor of Philosophy ­ Ph.D. ­ and Master of Philosophy ­ M.Phil. ­ under the auspices of the Institute for Maltese Studies

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30 (5) and 31 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws made by the Board of the Institute for Maltese Studies in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws of 2005 for the Degrees of Doctor of Philosophy ­ Ph.D. ­ and Master of Philosophy ­ M.Phil. ­ under the auspices of the Institute for Maltese Studies.

(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires ­

"the Board" means the Board of the Institute for Maltese Studies;

"the Degrees" means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy ­ Ph.D. ­ or the degree of Master of Philosophy ­ M.Phil. ­ as appropriate;

"the Institute" means the Institute for Maltese Studies; and

"the Principal Regulations" mean the Degrees of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - and Master of Philosophy - M.Phil. - Degrees Course Regulations, 1998.

Applicability

2. These bye-laws shall apply from February 2004 onwards.

Registration

3. (1) Applicants for the Degrees shall satisfy the provisions of this bye-law in addition to the requirements for registration laid down in the Principal Regulations.

(2) Applicants for admission to the Degrees shall be in possession of the qualifications specified in the Principal Regulations awarded by this or another university or qualifications of comparable standard recognised for this purpose by the Senate, in a discipline/s which, in the opinion of the Board, is closely related to the theme of the research proposal of the applicants. The Board may stipulate additional requirements, including successful completion of an approved programme of study.

(3) Applicants for the Master of Philosophy degree whose first degree is not an Honours degree at Second Class (Upper Division), may be accepted to read for the Master of Philosophy degree subject to pursuing a Qualifying Programme, as approved by the Board and Senate, and to its completion at the standard of at least Second Class Honours (Upper Division).

(4) Before registering for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, applicants shall normally be required to register in the first instance for the degree of Master of Philosophy. Applicants shall be recommended for direct registration for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy only in exceptional circumstances.

(5) The area within Maltese Studies chosen for research in both Degrees shall be of an interdisciplinary nature.

(6) Students for the Degrees may be required to participate fully in the Institute's research seminars.

Theses and Dissertations

4. (1) Students shall submit:

(a) a thesis of between 75,000 and 100,000 words in the case of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy; and

(b) a dissertation of between 50,000 and 65,000 words in the case of the degree of Master of Philosophy.

(2) No change to the title or the subject matter approved at the time of first registration shall be permitted unless it is endorsed by the supervisor and the Director, and approved by the Senate.

(3) Theses and dissertations shall comply with such instructions on format and presentation as may be approved from time to time by the Board.

(4) Students shall submit four identical, securely bound copies of the thesis or dissertation, as the case may be, upon being authorised to submit their work for examination in accordance with the Principal Regulations, and shall bring another identical copy to the viva voce examination.

(5) Not later than six weeks after the final approval of a thesis or dissertation by the examiners, students shall submit to the Institute three identical, printed copies of the work, bound between hard covers, one of which shall be deposited in the University Library.
