CERTIFICATION OF INDIVIDUAL STUDY-UNITS REGULATIONS, 2002

Citation and interpretation

1. (1) These regulations may be cited as the Certification of Individual Study-Units Regulations, 2002.

(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -

"the Board" means the Board of the faculty or institute or centre offering the study-units;

"ECTS credits" means credits awarded according to the guidelines of the European Credit Transfer System; and

"the Faculty" means the faculty or institute or centre offering the study-units.

Applicability

2. These regulations shall apply from October 2002 onwards.

Registration for Study-Units

3. (1) The University may, at the discretion of the Faculty concerned, offer the possibility to persons who are not registered in a course of studies leading to one of its awards to register as visiting students for:

(a) self-contained study-units that are offered within University undergraduate and postgraduate courses; or

(b) study-units that are designed ad hoc for particular needs, and approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Board.

(2) During an academic year, visiting students shall be allowed to register for study-units to which a total of not more than six credits (twelve ECTS credits) are assigned.

(3) On successful completion of a study-unit, visiting students shall be entitled to a transcript indicating the title, level and number of credits assigned to the study-unit and the grade achieved.

(4) Credits for such study-units are not normally transferable to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The Board of a Faculty offering a certificate, diploma or degree course may, however, accept the transfer of such credits to one of its courses if the content and level are comparable and if the study-units concerned have been completed not more than two years previously.

Admission Requirements

4. (1) Applicants shall be in possession of those qualifications required to follow the study-units with profit. These qualifications shall be approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Board.

(2) The registration of visiting students shall be made on the recommendation of the Board.

Applications

5. (1) Applicants shall apply to register for study-units on the prescribed form and within the time specified by the Office of the Registrar.

(2) The Board shall announce the study-units which may be taken by visiting students and their admission requirements before the beginning of each study-unit, normally at the beginning of each academic year. The study-units shall be offered depending on the availability of resources and the number of applicants who choose them.

Attendance

6. Attendance for lectures, seminars, tutorials and other learning experiences shall be compulsory and visiting students may be precluded from being assessed for a study-unit if attendance is not regular.

Assessment

7. Assessments shall be conducted under the same regulations and practices prevailing at the time the study-unit is offered.

Certification of Study-Units

8. Visiting students shall be eligible for certification if they:

(a) complete the study-unit, are awarded the credits assigned to it and satisfy all the requirements prescribed in these regulations; and

(b) satisfy any other requirements prescribed in any other relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the University.

Approved by Senate on 28th February 2002
