S-Cubed [Science Students Society] is an organisation that represents all students from the Faculty of Science. It is quite different from student organisations that you've encountered in your sixth form years.
With six different departments and many different course combinations with little intersection between them, many students do not get the chance to meet each other. So S-Cubed aims to bridge this gap and unite the students of the Faculty of Science through various activities.
We aim to do this firstly by hosting several social and leisure events. We have a number of staple events throughout the year. Around November we have the weekend seminar, where you can start socialising with your fellow class friends while staying over at a hotel. Later on, we have On The Trail, where we go camping out for a night. In the second semester we have the Lab, a much-awaited, science-themed open-bar party for the mad scientists among us! We also have the Annual Science Gathering, where students and lecturers get to meet up and socialise in a calm, informal setting.
Without doubt, our biggest event is our annual five day trip abroad! In the past we have visited Switzerland, Paris, London, Munich and Vienna. Stay tuned for where we'll be going this year!
S-Cubed is not just about parties. We also have an education office, which does video tutorials, sets up site-visits and keeps you posted on job opportunities and further education opportunities. This year we also held an educational trip to London, with the help of the biology department.
We also hosted Project Alpha, where students form teams and submit proposals for a scientific project. These proposals are judged by a panel of academics and the winners are given funding to implement their project, which is then given funding.
Another aim of S-Cubed is to communicate science to the public. We believe that it is important for the public to have a good perception of science and be aware of what research is being done at University. To do this, S-Cubed takes part in a number of events such as Science in the City, where we do various demonstrations to educate and entertain. Also, watch out for our Quizzing Campus videos and Speedy Science posts on Facebook!
Apart from all of that, S-Cubed also tries it's best to improve the social wellbeing of the students. S-Cubed represents science students in KSU's KPS committee, which takes stands on current affairs. S-Cubed also sets up the Annual Science Conference, where we discuss a topic that is relevant to science students and write a policy paper. Last year's theme was on empowering undergraduates through research.
