| DESCRIPTION | More specific knowledge and practice in a topic covered in the programme of studies is developed during a 3 month period after formal examinations in May/June. Students work on individual research type dissertations until presentation of the dissertation is made in late September. A dissertation topic may be selected by the student or allocated by the Department. Emphasis is placed on communication skills both written and oral, and the student will be expect to give a 20 minute talk on his/her individual dissertation to internal and external examiners and any invited audience from industry. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide the student knowledge of carrying out an exercise in a particular topic of relevance to the petroleum industry to acquire and synthesise data and information, make a critical analysis of the information, and eventually present the findings in a report and make a presentation to management. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to broaden further the knowledge and understand of the theory and practice in a particular topic of the programme of studies. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will develop the skills needed to: (i) Conceive and formulate a hypothesis in a particular topic covered in the programme of studies; (ii) Select and use the appropriate principles and procedures in a given situation; (iii) Undertake literature review in the particular topic and synthesise relevant information from the review; (iv) Acquire, analyse, evaluate, interpret and integrate any relevant data needed; (v) Undertake an evaluation and a critical analysis of the topic and report accordingly; (vi) Present the findings to an audience. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Same textbooks of the 10 lecture study-units of the programme of studies plus numerous publications in the various topics. |
