DESCRIPTION | Prerequisite PHY2120 Introduction to statistical mechanics: Relation to thermodynamics and kinetic theory Quantum statistical principles and classical limit: Assemblies of particles; microstates and macrostates; Bose-Einstein, Fermi-Dirac and Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics; statistical interpretation of entropy; distribution functions and partition functions Applications: The monatomic ideal gas; the quantised linear oscillator and diatomic gas; heat capacity of a solid; blackbody radiation (photon gas); electron gas; paramagnetic solid Recommended Texts: F W Sears and G L Salinger, Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory and Statistical Thermodynamics, Addison-Wesley |
