SmartCity Malta
Grasping opportunities being created by SmartCity Malta

SmartCity Malta, a joint venture between SmartCity and the Government of Malta, is a self-sustained township for the knowledge economy. SmartCity's vision is to create a global network of self-sustained business townships to foster the knowledge economy. SmartCity Malta will be home to a vibrant knowledge-economy community anchored by leading global, regional and local companies. This environment will have a significant positive impact on the Maltese economy and will facilitate knowledge transfer and job creation.

Located at Ricasoli, SmartCity Malta combines TECOM's specialised expertise in the creation and management of knowledge based industry clusters, with Sama Dubai’s strength in real estate development in the international market to create an infrastructure and environment catered to the requirements of knowledge based companies and knowledge workers.

With an investment outlay equivalent to US $300 million, SmartCity Malta will transform Malta into a state-of-the-art ICT and media business community based on the successful models of Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and Dubai Knowledge Village. In fact, SmartCity Malta is the largest foreign direct investment in the ICT and media sectors ever made in Malta. The Government of Malta will invest the land and retain equity of 9 per cent in the project. The first deliverables of SmartCity Malta will be the office space building providing 12,000 square metres of intelligent office space.

The project is expected to generate a minimum of 5,600 jobs and create a total office space of 158,830 square meters. SmartCity Malta will create the infrastructure to develop a self-sustained township comprising of office space, residential and lifestyle elements. In 2010, SmartCity Malta will be releasing ready-to-operate state-of-the-art office space with intelligent infrastructure and picturesque surroundings.

SmartCity Malta will create many opportunities for Maltese citizens to either start-up a business at SmartCity Malta or seek employment in the ICT and media fields that will contribute to the growth of the Maltese knowledge-based economy.

The way the SmartCity concept is structured also facilitates ICT and media employees to develop competencies in niche sectors. Undoubtedly, all this leads to better employment and a better quality of life.

SmartCity Malta will also offer jobs in other sectors that are required to fulfill the SmartCity lifestyle. These include retail and recreational facilities, hotels, residential complexes, health and fitness clubs, meeting and leisure areas, social and cultural events, clinics, schools, educational institutions and day-care centres.

A series of information sessions extended over several months are being held by SmartCity Malta to provide all necessary information to interested persons. The aim of these sessions is to familiarise the various publics with the opportunities that will arise in a short span of years as SmartCity Malta develops, and in turn, allow entrepreneurs, educators and students to be in a better position to grasp the opportunities that will be created by SmartCity Malta.

SmartCity also creates a global network to assist the companies to tap into various markets, opportunities and talent. SmartCity Malta, along with SmartCity Kochi in India, are the first two projects. Apart from fostering productive linkages and tapping into synergies between knowledge-industry centres worldwide, this global network allows easy access to different markets, talent pools, possibilities of business partnerships and sharing of market intelligence.

More information sessions are planned for the academic year 2008/2009. Click here for more information about SmartCity and SmartCity Malta.
