COURSE OVERVIEW
The overall aim of the Master of Psychology in Educational Psychology programme is to equip students with the necessary educational psychology knowledge, values, attitudes and skills required to practise as an Educational Psychologist. This is done firstly through taught units on the theories and research on the promotion of health and wellbeing, development and learning of all children and young people, and on relevant prevention, assessment and intervention strategies. Secondly, students have 9 hours of supervised field placement per week throughout the course for them to develop the professional values, ethics, attitudes and skills to address the various needs of children through individual, group, system, and society level strategies. Thirdly students are also provided with training in research including the submission of a dissertation. The Master of Psychology in Educational Psychology programme is the only route in Malta through which, when followed by two years of supervised practice, individuals can obtain a warrant to practice as Educational Psychologists.
 
LEARNING OUTCOMES The Master of Psychology in Educational Psychology is intended to provide all candidates with the necessary professional education for qualifying to become educational psychologists as well as with a mastery of the research process. They gain the knowledge, values, attitudes and skills required for one to provide the necessary professional understanding and support for meeting the psychological needs of children and young people, their families and educators, to ensure the health and wellbeing, development and learning of all. These include an attitude of care and respect for all clients (children and young people, their families and carers and educators), whatever their diversity; a focus on people’s strengths and resilience; sensitivity to professional ethical issues; and competences in prevention, assessment and intervention for work with individuals, groups, systems and society.
 
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND ACCESS TO FURTHER STUDY Persons who acquire the Master of Psychology in Educational Psychology degree, followed by two years of supervised practice, can work as warranted Educational Psychologists in schools and other education, mental health and community settings. Educational psychologists often work with children and families at risk, children and young people with developmental, learning difficulties and disabilities, including socio-emotional, behavioural and academic challenges arising from individual as well as contextual factors.

The Master of Psychology in Educational Psychology also provides candidates access to doctoral programmes in psychology both locally and overseas.
 
MOBILITY PERIOD Students who wish to go for a field placement abroad are encouraged to do so during the summer period between the first and second year of the course.
 
ADMISSION AND
PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS
The Course shall be open to applicants who are proficient in the Maltese Language and who are in possession of the following qualifications:

(a) a Bachelor degree in Psychology with at least Second Class Honours (Upper Division), or an equivalent qualification from this or another university, or

(b) a Bachelor degree in Psychology or a Bachelor degree with Psychology as a main area of study, in both cases obtained with at least Category IIA or another degree in a related area deemed relevant by the Board of Studies obtained with at least Second Class (Honours)(Upper Division),
provided that all applicants applying in terms of this paragraph would either have obtained 60 ECTS credits in Psychology, as approved by the Board, following the award of their degree, or have obtained a Higher Diploma in Psychology with at least Pass with Merit, which together with their degree are deemed to be comparable to the qualification indicated in paragraph (a).

Applicants referred to in paragraphs (a) and (b) are also required to have either (i) a minimum of 2400 hours of experience in a clinical or counselling or educational or forensic or health setting, or (ii) a minimum of 1200 hours of experience in a clinical or counselling or educational or forensic or health setting, under the supervision of a warranted psychologist. This experience should normally be obtained after applicants have been awarded the qualification indicated in the above paragraphs.

The maximum number of students that can be admitted into the course is 5 students.

When the number is so limited and the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of places available, applicants shall be selected according to the following criteria, which shall be weighted as follows:

(a) degree type and classification – 20%
(b) work experience in the area or a related field – 15%
(c) professional aptitude and disposition – 55% and
(d) references – 10%.

Professional aptitude and disposition shall be measured by means of exercises involving (i) role play with a client, (ii) group discussion, and (iii) personal interview.

Applicants who obtain less than 60% for the professional aptitude and disposition criterion shall automatically not be admitted into the Course.

If the number of applicants who satisfy the selection criteria exceeds the number of available places, applicants shall be accepted according to merit.

The interviewing board appointed by the Board shall be composed of at least three members.

For the purpose of selection, applicants who fully satisfy the entry requirements by 31st August preceding the commencement of the Course shall be considered first.

Whilst filling in the online application, applicants must have the Police Certificate of Conduct in hand as they must include certain details from it in the application form.

On acceptance on the course, applicants will also be asked to submit an original Police Certificate of Conduct (not more than 6 months old) to the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2017.
